The Australian Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City is seeking a self-motivated and well-organised qualified candidate for an expected vacancy to fill the position of Economic and Trade Officer/Interpreter.  This position will be offered to the successful candidate on a contractual basis.

Selection for this position will be based on merit and judged against the following specific selection criteria.

1. You must have highly developed liaison and interpersonal skills, with a range of interlocutors or clients and high level officials in local and foreign government agencies or multinational organisations and an ability to represent the organisation at high level meetings.

What would really make you stand out is experience with the diplomatic community.

2. Excellent oral and written communication in both English and Vietnamese; the ability to provide high quality translation and interpretation in English and Vietnamese. 


What would really make you stand out is that you have studied or worked in Australia and have a solid understanding of Australian culture.

3. Ability to undertake research, analyse and report on complex issues involving economic, trade and investment developments.
 

What would really make you stand out is relevant educational and/or work experience demonstrating your solid knowledge of Vietnamese and international economics and developments.

4. Highly developed organisational skills, including time management skills and the ability to handle pressure while meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.

5. A pro-active working style that is flexible and team-oriented.

6. You must have experience using the Microsoft Office suite of programs and competence in using IT equipment effectively.

About the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

About the position

Under direction from the Consul (Economic & Political), the position provides research of economic, trade and investment developments within Vietnam, and interpretation for the Head of Post (HOP) and A-Based officers.

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide research of economic, trade and investment developments in Vietnam;
  • Provide interpretation services for the HOP,  A-based officers and high level visitors including translation of official correspondence as required;
  • Monitor local and international media for items of foreign and trade policy interest;
  • Manage the Direct Aid Program, including liaison with non-government agencies and Vietnamese officials;
  • Assist with planning and delivery of public diplomacy events to promote Australian foreign and trade policy interests;
  • Assist with program arrangements for parliamentary and official visits as a protocol officer and act as an interpreter; and
  • Assist in monitoring political and human rights issues, including providing local cultural and protocol context for A-Based staff;
  • Arrange travel program and briefing materials, and undertake travel outside HCMC to southern provinces, if required.


    Qualifications/Experience

  • Demonstrated relevant qualifications and experience.
  • Proven ability to undertake complex research and analytical tasks.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Vietnamese.     
  • Proficiency in high level report writing.
  • Strong liaison, representational and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software package, including internet research skills.
